It has been etched in our minds that
bigger is better, right? Well, when it comes to diamonds this statement
couldn’t be more true. When we first get engaged most couples are just
starting out and we get the ring we can afford. It’s really the first
big investment that we make in our adult lives. It may or may not be
the size we envisioned having, but you love it and it becomes a part of
you. Maybe after a big anniversary, birth of a child, or maybe you just
always wanted bigger, you decide to explore some options to change your
ring.
If you are like most people however,
when it’s time to do it, you just can’t bear to trade it in. Nothing is
as beautiful as the diamond ring he bought for you! If the thought of
trading it in is not an option, there are several ways you can make
your existing ring look bigger. Here are a few tips!
Tip 1
Halo |
The
best way to make your diamond look larger is to add diamonds around the
center stone. You can add what is called a Halo of diamonds that surrounds the center stone.
The halo's come in all different size diamonds, so depending on your
budget, will factor what size you would want. Of course the bigger the
halo diamonds the bigger your ring will look!
There is
also what is called a Bezel setting, that is metal enclosure that is
the same color as the band. It frames the stone so diamonds can be
added in this piece to give it a smooth surface around your diamond so
it will not snag clothes and will be smooth to the touch.

Tip 2
You can also opt for side diamonds or
color stones that are smaller than your center stone for accentuation.
This will enhance your diamond and make the ring as a whole look like a
bigger piece of jewelry. The accent diamonds can be any size and will
enhance your ring to give it a bigger look. The accent diamonds can be
the same or a different shape than your center diamond. Maybe you have
an old pair of diamond stud earrings that you don’t wear anymore that
would be perfect to add as the side stones!
Tip 3
To create a larger looking center
stone choose a setting that uses less prongs. For instance, a ring with
6 prongs would have more metal coverage than a setting with 4 prongs,
making the diamond appear larger. You can also trade in your current
setting for one that has a smaller shank, or band. This will allow for
more of a contrast between the diamond and band.
Tip 4
The shape of the diamond really does
play a big part on how large it looks. Round diamonds typically look
smaller than fancy shape cuts. Some cuts, such as elongated styles like
marquise, oval or pear, give the illusion of a larger stone. So, if you
do decide to trade it in, keep this in mind!
